REQUIREMENTS TO EARN AN ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA (OSSD)

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) achievement is what our students are aiming for. The OSSD and the student’s final transcript are what will allow them to gain admission to universities and colleges. To achieve the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students must complete a total of 30 credits (18 of which are compulsory and 12 that are electives), the Ontario Literacy Test, and 40 hours of community service. A credit is passing (50% and above) a 110-hour course.

In addition, they must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, or complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

  1. 4 English (1 credit per grade)
  2. 1 French-as-a-Second Language
  3. 3 Mathematics (at least 1 in grade 11 or 12)
  4. 2 Science
  5. 1 Canadian History
  6. 1 Canadian Geography
  7. 1 The Arts
  8. 1 Health and Physical Education
  9. 0.5 Civics
  10. 0.5 Career Studies

 

  1. 11.  Additional English or a third language or Social Sciences and the Humanities or Canadian and World Studies or Guidance and Career Education or Cooperative Education.

    12. Additional credit in Health and Physical Education or the Arts or Business Studies or Cooperative Education.

    13. Additional credit in Science (Grade 11 or 12) or Technological Education (Grades 9 – 12) or Cooperative Education. 

    A credit is granted when a course of at least 110 hours is completed with a pass**
    Each of the courses listed has a 1.0 credit value unless otherwise indicated (e.g., 0.5 credit).
    A maximum of 3 ESL credits may be counted towards the 4 required English credits.

    ELECTIVE CREDITS (TOTAL OF 12) 

    In addition to the 18 compulsory credits, students must earn 12 optional credits. Students may earn these credits by completing the courses that they have selected from the elective courses will be selected from Canadian Independent College’s course offerings based on the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum.

    * A maximum of 3 credits in ESL or ELD may be counted towards the 4 compulsory credits in English, but the 4th must be a credit for a Grade 12 compulsory English course.

    **A maximum of 2 credits in cooperative education can count as compulsory credits.

    ***The 12 optional credits may include up to 4 credits earned through approved dual credit courses. The courses are listed by their grade in the Academic Program.
